What you need to volunteer in your city

Am I the right age? Do I need qualifications? Do I need experience? Is there something to pay?

Those questions stop thousands of people who would have an enormous amount to contribute, and who assume they do not qualify for something that is in fact open to almost anyone willing to commit.

The formal requirements

Legal adulthood for most roles involving direct contact. But there are programmes for 14- to 17-year-olds, accompanied by an adult or within a school structure. If you are that age and want to help, you do not have to wait.

Valid identity document, for internal records. It is a matter of safety and traceability, especially when working with children or older people.

A criminal record certificate at some organizations, particularly for direct work with minors. It is obtained online, free, in a few minutes.

Attending the induction. One to three hours explaining how the organization runs, what is expected of you, and the basic safety and respect protocols. It is among the most valuable things you will get. Do not skip it.

What you do not need

Money. A legitimate foundation never charges you to volunteer. If you are asked, be suspicious immediately.

Specific professional training for most roles.

Large amounts of free time. Two well-used hours a week are worth more than eight scattered hours a month.

What you do need, and what costs more

Genuine willingness

Volunteering is not social tourism. It is not showing up once to take photographs.

When you commit to being there on Saturday, people are expecting you. Not showing up without warning damages trust that took months to build.

Patience with the timelines

Organizations run on limited resources and formal processes that exist to protect themselves and the people they serve.

Getting an answer in a week is not indifference. It is operational reality. Understanding that is also part of what you contribute.

The humility to learn

However qualified you are, the social context has rules you only learn in the field. Listen first, propose afterwards.

Someone who arrives convinced they know more than the permanent team creates unnecessary friction. Someone who arrives willing to learn adds value from day one.

A minimum of emotional handling

You will encounter hard realities: children in complicated situations, families in extreme poverty, people who have lived through violence or abandonment.

You cannot save all of them and you cannot solve all their problems. Your role is to contribute what you can, from the right place, without burning out to the point of having to leave.

What organizations prefer

They say it repeatedly: they would rather have someone with no experience and a willingness to learn than someone experienced with rigid expectations.

Technical skills are taught in weeks. Attitude takes years and is what sustains social work over the long run.

Your value is not only in what you can do. It is in whether you come back each week, whether you listen before proposing, and whether what you promise matches what you deliver.

At Corag, coordinating a delivery does require identity validation and a verified connection to the territory. Offering help does not: that happens in the application with no further requirements.
