Social activities to help people in Colombia: the six categories

Volunteering, donations, parches, brigades, field days. The terms sound alike and it is hard to tell which is for you — and meanwhile months pass.

Almost everything that exists fits into six categories. Knowing them lets you choose by time, skills and connection to the cause, rather than by whatever appeared first.

1. Food and nutrition

Community kitchens, food distribution, preparing meals for people living on the street, food security campaigns in rural areas.

It is the most accessible category: extra hands are almost always needed and the impact is immediate and visible. A good place to start if you have never done anything.

2. Education and training

Tutoring children, trade workshops for young people at risk, training for single mothers, adult literacy, school support.

It demands more continuity, because education is built on sustained relationships. In exchange, it produces the most durable changes.

3. Health and wellbeing

Medical brigades in remote areas, dental clinics, prevention campaigns, accompanying patients, community psychological support.

With health training you contribute technical knowledge. Without it, you support logistics — equally necessary and always short-staffed.

4. Environment and sustainability

Cleaning rivers, planting trees, environmental education in schools, recycling brigades, urban gardens.

For anyone who prefers physical activity and self-contained days over a weekly commitment.

5. Human accompaniment

Visits to care homes, support for people with disabilities, support for victims of the conflict, company for hospitalised children.

It needs no technical skills. It needs empathy and consistent presence, which are scarcer than any qualification.

6. Institutional strengthening

Contributing your profession to organizations needing accounting, marketing, technology, legal work, communications or HR.

This is professional volunteering and its impact multiplies: you are not helping one family, you are helping the organization serve many more. For professionals short on time, it is the option with the best return per hour.

How to pick yours

Three honest questions:

  • What genuinely moves you when you read about social issues?
  • Which cause is still on your mind after you close the app?
  • Who would you actually like to spend time with?

Those answers guide better than a category’s popularity or a location’s proximity.

Two things that help afterwards

They are not mutually exclusive. You can give an hour a week to tutoring and one Saturday a month to an environmental brigade. The combination gives variety without losing depth.

Rotate periodically. After a year in one category, exploring another widens your understanding of how the country’s social fabric works enormously. Few people ever get that perspective.
